What is a CEU?

The Continuing Education Unit, commonly known as a CEU, is a nationally recognized way of recording the educational accomplishments of an individual who has completed significant non-credit educational and career enhancement experiences. One CEU is a unit of measurement based on time—defined as ten (10) hours of full participation in an organized continuing education experience under responsible sponsorship, capable direction, and qualified instruction. For example, an authorized continuing education program that requires a participant to attend 16 hours of scheduled meeting time would be valued at 1.6 CEUs.

The CEU process offers printable validation and acknowledgement of extra learning sessions that students are involved in outside of the normal work environment. Although CEUs are not equivalent to academic credit and are not accepted by most colleges and universities toward a degree, they may be accepted as evidence of educational attainment by employers, certification and licensing agencies, and professional associations. Participants should check with their licensing/accreditation agencies regarding the acceptance of CEU credit.

Additional CEU Information for UW-System Program Coordinators

Continuing Education Units have been offered since 1971 by University of Wisconsin institutions. It is now possible to earn them in thousands of different offerings annually. CEUs are presently awarded for a broad range of programs—from the arts, to business, to science, and health care.  CEUs are authorized for a variety of educational formats and media including classes, workshops, short courses, seminars, conferences, independent study, etc.

How to set up CEUs for your continuing education program

University of Wisconsin-Madison and UW-Extension departments may offer CEUs for continuing education courses provided the criteria and standards are met. Program Coordinators wishing to make CEUS available must submit a written request in advance to have the program included as part of the Student Record file. Required information includes the following:

  • program title
  • dates the program will be held
  • meeting location
  • a copy of the program outline/agenda or descriptive brochure copy
  • names, email addresses, and phone numbers for all presenters

Once the program is completed, a program roster (list of participants, including names, addresses, phone numbers, email addresses), and the number of CEUs per participant must also be submitted. This information will be entered into the student record file. A cumulative record of CEUS earned through participating departments will be available to students for a fee through the Student Records Office.
